Upstate Visual Arts’ spring juried show and exhibition, formerly known as the Small Works Show, now honors Claude Smith, a beloved watercolor teacher at the UVA School of Art who passed away in April of 2004. In view of Claude’s dedication to UVA and its educational and artistic mission, the Smith family created a generous endowment to support the UVA spring show each year. In appreciation of this generous gift, UVA renamed the spring show the Claude E. Smith Jr. Juried Show. The goal of the Claude Smith Show is to promote awareness and education of the visual arts through showcasing the vast talent of the visual artists in the South Carolina Upstate.
